What's new for 2026/27

The Personal Allowance remains frozen at £12,570 and the higher-rate threshold at £50,270 for 2026/27, so as pay rises more of it is taxed — a phenomenon known as fiscal drag. Student loan repayment thresholds and the new Plan 5 (for courses started from September 2023) are included.

Frequently asked questions

When does the 2026/27 NHS pay change take effect?
The NHS pay year runs from 1 April. Any 2026/27 Agenda for Change pay award is normally applied from April and backdated if the deal is confirmed later in the year.
What tax rates does the 2026/27 calculator use?
It uses the 2026/27 Personal Allowance of £12,570, Income Tax bands of 20% / 40% / 45% (or Scotland's six bands), and 8% / 2% National Insurance.
Will my take-home pay go up with a pay rise?
Usually yes, but a headline percentage rise doesn't all reach your pocket — some is lost to tax, NI and pension. Use our NHS pay rise calculator to see the real increase.
