NHS pay in Scotland

NHS Scotland negotiates its own Agenda for Change pay deal, which in recent years has been the most generous of the four UK nations. On top of that, Income Tax is devolved to the Scottish Parliament, so your take-home pay is calculated using the Scottish bands rather than the rest-of-UK rates.

The practical effect: NHS staff earning below about £28,000 keep marginally more than their English counterparts, while higher-banded staff pay a little more tax. National Insurance, student loan repayments and the NHS pension work the same way across the UK.

Frequently asked questions

Is NHS pay different in Scotland?
Yes — NHS Scotland has its own Agenda for Change pay scales, usually the highest of the four nations, negotiated separately by the Scottish Government. Income Tax is also devolved, so take-home pay differs from England.
How does Scottish Income Tax affect my NHS take-home pay?
Scotland has six Income Tax bands (Starter 19%, Basic 20%, Intermediate 21%, Higher 42%, Advanced 45%, Top 48%). Lower earners pay slightly less than in England; higher earners pay more. National Insurance is the same UK-wide.
Does this calculator use Scottish tax bands?
Yes — this page is preset to Scotland, so Income Tax uses the Scottish bands. You can switch nation at any time using the toggle.
